Dr. Francine Kaufman discusses diabetes prevention and treatment. Dr. Kaufman is currrently leading two NIH diabetes investigations, both focusing on preventing and treating type 2 diabetes in children and teenagers. She discusses how people can modify their lifestyles and make a real shift to healthy behaviors.

In addition, Dr. Kaufman discusses the impact of diabetes in ethnic populations and lower socioeconomic groups, and how to enroll communities in prevention programs and behavioral change.

Dr. Francine Kaufman is Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Communications at the Keck School of Medicine and the Annenberg School of Communications of USC, and Head of the Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaufman has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1980, and is the current Chair of the National Diabetes Education Program, which is jointly sponsored by the NIH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Kaufman has published more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, as well as more than 200 articles and abstracts. She is the author of more than 30 books and book chapters, including the best-selling book, Diabesity.

In November 2008, Dr. Kaufman joined Medtronic as Vice President of Global Medical Affairs for the diabetes business.
